Review
Polaroid is the only firm offering instant-imaging print cameras in the United
States today, so you don’t have any brand choice in this particular category.
But, Polaroid cameras are available in several different sizes of print formats,
from small postage stamp size images, which are popular with young
photographers, to this new model that produces 4X4-1/10-inch color prints. The
Polaroid Spectra 1200 has a contemporary design with a new two-tone silver and
gray finish, weighs 23 percent less than earlier models, and is quite compact
when closed so it’s very portable. With depressions on the bottom for thumb
positioning, it’s easy to grip tightly. The few controls are well marked and
easy to operate. Two-zone manual focusing sets the camera for subjects 2 to4
feet or 4 feet to infinity. An LED light beside the bright viewfinder glows when
it’s in close-up mode. The built-in flash range is from 2 to 10 feet, and since
the battery is built into the film pack, you load a fresh battery every time you
put in a new ten-pack of film. The resulting test prints were colorful and
sharply detailed, self-developing in about a minute after they were ejected from
the camera.
